As fall approaches, families across the country are settling into another school year. With classes already underway, parents have been busy checking school supply lists, shopping for new clothes, and planning for the expenses that continue to come with the season.
For many families, entering a new school year can be an exciting time, but it can also bring significant financial pressure. WBUR reports that new data from Deloitte found that Boston-area parents expect to spend an average of $648 per child on back-to-school supplies, technology, clothing, and other necessities this year. That is roughly $90 more than the national average, and a family with two children could be spending the equivalent of a month’s rent on supplies.
While the Boston average school supply costs are lower than they were last year, the cost of preparing for a new school year remains high for many.
